I haven't chosen my candidate yet but Kucinich needs more than just my vote. He (and every candidate) needs enough of the moderate republican vote, and I don't see how Kucinich can get that.

well yeah, obviously, you just get MORE progressive people to vote. :-) It's a pretty good debate, a good forum and I like a lot about a lot of these candidates, at least on these issues.

I like Dennis Kucinich too He got my vote in x (well, inasmuch as anyone can given how the Democrats did the primaries that year), and will get it again the next round. Seriously, this guy is the only one who gives a shit about our food supply and keeping it free of GMOs! And his views on establishing a Department of Peace as well as universal health care, LGBT rights, and a host of other issues are major plusses too. If he shows up in anyone's neck of the woods, do consider seeing him speak. He's a really great speaker.

really? i don't think he was well reasoned in his arguments at all. i think it's one thing to believe in a policy, but it's another thing to enact it. and unless you have the intellect and language to convince others of your viewpoint, you're dead in the water. i think hillary did the best in arguing the 'why's behind the issues as much as the 'what's. i think richardson showed his true asshole colors (he thinks it's ok to joke around and say maricon as if it means nothing) and i think that it was rather funny that edwards almost accidentally stated he was pro-gay marriage. i tuned in too late to see much of obama's part, but i have read his hrc score card. the important message from the electable candidates (clinton, obama and maybe edwards) is that they would never stand in the way of states granting full marriage rights. this is something never before seen in american politics and it is HUGE.

But if the choice is between... ...people who sound more appealing while speaking but don't have the voting record to back up their words, vs. someone whose speeches you don't like but did vote their convictions, who would you pick? Kucinich has a really interesting voting history, starting with how he changed his staunch anti-abortion stance, and in particular, his refusal to sell Muni Light to corporate interests, and thus costing him his job as Mayor of Cleveland back in the 'xs. Hillary on the other hand has sold so many people down the river, there is just no way in hell I can see voting for her. I can understand people preferring how she answered the questions, but personally, I still have to go by the evidence via voting records and how they reflect representing the people, as well as personal convictions.

Did we listen to the same thing? H. Clinton made it clear that marriage should be an issue for the states to decide, and not for the federal government. Same-sex marriages must be federally recognized in order for us to get equal benefits (for example, joint filing for federal taxes and immigration). Individual states recognizing same-sex marriage is a start, however the lack of federal recognition results in continued unequal status. I interpret this as her saying marriage should be left to the states so that as president she would not have to take a stand and risk losing some of her supporters. She acts as if she is supportive of the GLBT community, yet her actions do not support this claim.

a statement from HRC president The following is a statement by Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese on the event: “Tonight was an important night in the fight for equality for GLBT Americans. We pulled the curtain back a bit and gave all Americans a deeper look inside the candidates’ core beliefs about the issues that affect our community. From repealing ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ supporting equal employment rights, providing full funding for the HIV/AIDS epidemic, to eliminating the Defense of Marriage Act, these candidates went on record and committed to fighting for equality in all sectors of our society. Unfortunately, we have more work to do. The overwhelming majority of the candidates do not support marriage equality. While we heard very strong commitments to civil unions and equality in federal rights and benefits, their reasons for opposing equality in civil marriage tonight became even less clear. Over the course of the presidential campaign, we will continue to ask these questions and demand real answers from the candidates who were appeared tonight — and from those who didn’t show up. The next president must be committed to not only doing what’s achievable, but also what’s right.”

let me explain a little bit more... i didn't approach this debate as a winner vs. loser debate because the candidates didn't actually go head to head. instead i approached it as a way to determine how well the candidates knew the issues and could articulate where they stood and what they were willing to do. i used it as a glimpse into how they might act when meeting with key congresspeople in efforts to push legislation through. [remember from the clinton era that commitment to an issues is only half the be, but the ability to convince others of your position is required to actually get shit done. the president cannot fix lgbt issues on his or her own.] that said, i do think h. clinton spoke the most in a manner that would convince an outside viewer of the need for change. similarly, i do not think she is the most committed to that change. i wish that kucinich and gravel had been given more difficult questions, because i wanted to see how they could use reason and logic to answer more ambiguous issues. while i do know where they stand and i do know they have a clear voting record, i do not know if they would be capable of convincing others to support their goals. i haven't seen it before and i did not see it last night. i never said hillary has my vote, for the record. i imagine a lot will change in the next year or so.

    H. Clinton was the only one who even came close to illuminating for me how the issue of equality in civil unions is not the same as the issue of same-sex marriage. I still don't quite get it but I got a glimpse of something I hadn't considered before. What I'm pondering now is the idea that the issue of same-sex marriage, to the ignorant masses, is a moral issue. And if it's pushed for in this political climate it could very well result in the resurrection of the for a constitutional ammendment to ban gay marriage. That ammendment cannot happen, it simply cannot be allowed to happen. It would be an implantation of discrimination into the constitution, the very document every American must rely on for protection from discrimination. It is the only vehicle we have for ultimately achieving equality and without it, all would be lost, and not just for the LGBT community. And I got a sense that H. Clinton was more in favor of protecting the Constitution from such a demise (and thereby ultimately preserving the vehicle on which rests our be for equality) than in taking a stand on an issue that does't belong in the federal government hands to begin with. And so now I have to explore how I think and feel about the idea that we, as conscionable human beings and Americans, must do our part to ensure that such a violation of the Constitution never happens, even if that means we have to take incremental steps before seeing the fullness of our agenda achieved. Doesn't mean I'll vote for Hillary. She's on the wrong side of a lot of things for me and I don't like her underneath it all. But she gave me information and something to think about.

here's the thing We have gay marriage in Massachusetts. The legislature decided it was dicriminatory not to allow same sex couples to marry. People said "too much too soon!" "we're doomed" "there will be a backlash!" Those who were against it mpted to bring a vote to the people. It failed. It wasn't up to the people just like civil rights for blacks was not up to the people. The legislature defines the law. Would Hillary appoint judges in favor of gay marriage? I think that is the fundamental question. I think this is how it all came down. I am surely no expert so I could be entirely off base.

At the state leve it works so we replicate what's working at the state level. Most of the candidates believe it belongs at the state level so taken by itself that makes sense. Also agreed, backlash is not a justification for not fighting the fight. But for me, the backlash from pushing this aspect of the agenda (same sex marriage) seems so potentially dangerous, a genuine threat to the underlying vehicle we must rely on to achieve our equal rights. I agree again that it's not up to the people to decide. I couldn't agree more. But my confidence in the political and governmental processes designed to hold the people to what is and isn't up to them is quite eroded. We're in a pre-emptive military occupation for fuck's sake. Never did I imagine that I would see that in my lifetime. I don't vote based on these fears about the underlying erosion of our governmental processes. I vote with full faith in our systems. I have to because they're all we've got. But it is the place from which I dialogue and explore. I think there is real threat to the Constitution. I believe, given the times we live in, that it is possible that the vote for a constitutional ammendment to ban same sex marriage (thereby implanting discrimination into the Constitution and destroying forever and for every American the fundamental vehicle for ensuring human and civil rights protection) could get to the people, outrageous and frightening as that may be. Again, these are just my thoughts at the moment, about thisissue. It is not necessarily the place from which I will cast my vote on election day. I have been known to be quite couragous and at other times quite self-serving on election day. One thing I refuse to be on any election day is ignorant. The broader picture is so much larger than thisissue and I'll do my best to be as balanced in my vote as I can be. The broader issue in this election, for me, is that the rule of the straight, white, male, christian has to end. That is the fundamental place from which I'll cast my vote.

I am hopeful. Here's what I am hoping. This administration, that put itself in place illegally and against the will of the people have pushed the pendulum as far to the right as we have seen in our lifetimes. The result will be the inevitable swing to the left. Just as far as they pushed it right but in the other direction. If it weren't for these foolish righty neocons in right now, we may not have had Hillary and Barack as presidential candidates. We may not have had a LOGO debate on gay issues! We may not have a potential for universal healthcare! Am I being naive? Perhaps. It's the only way I can make it through this horseshit we have going right now without slitting my wrists. That is NOT an exaggeration.

i vote kucinich i listened to them all. obama had some good things to say. don't even get me started on hilary. dennis kucinich moved me. i thought he was a very passionate speaker. i thought he had amazing ideas. i felt he was the ONLYwho was truly, x% behind HUMAN rights. for EVERY i felt like he was the onlywho wasn't trying to *sell* himself to get the presidency. he's been around a while. knows how shit works. and he doesn't give up. i think that speaks VOLUMES above anything any other candidate had to say. he left me wanting to hear more. he gave me a little more hope in humanity last night. there really ARE people out there who want to do good things for EVERYONE and include EVERYONE in the progression of america. i LOVED that he spoke of educating people. he's the onlywho mentioned that. education is the only road to understanding our diverse population. the only way to open up effective lines of communication betweenanother. to efficiently diffuse and solve problems. to work better together. to open up minds and hearts to understanding and possibly even ACCEPTING another point of view. i realize i have a very *utopian* view of things. but i truly believe in my heart that it's not that hard to achieve. and if there is a person out there to motivate people to become better citizens and teach us how to work WITHanother than AGAINSTanother, i feel like that guy is it. /x cents. :)

Hip hip hurray! My thoughts exactly. I liked when he said, and I believe him, that he and his wife were talking about these issues and they thought about how awful it would be ifpeople who love each other as deeply and passionately as they do couldn't get married! It would be devastating! I think that was his actual word: devastating. I teared up. I always liked him. Especially because he is trying to IMPEACH these mutherfuckerz, but now I'm ready to campaign for the guy.

My probably unpopular x cents... I don't want to back a losing presidential candidate no matter how much (s)he may represent my beliefs. I don't claim to know a lot about politics, but I do know people. I seeissues here: x) diluting the voting power x) demanding radical change First, I am still perturbed with people who voted for Ralph Nader and put George W. Bush in office. I think that if those people (splinter parties collectively) focused more on keeping Republicans out of office and less on pursuing their unique agenda (through the presidental campaign), we'd be having a going away party for President Gore next year. Secondly, I would love for gay marriage to beof those things we look at and say, can you imagine that used to be illegal?? But honestly, it's like Hillary trying to get Universal Health Care in x. It'sthing to want something that is good and right. It's another to know how to get it. Americans are stubborn, independent individuals. You can not say to them, "Here. This is good for you. Do it." It won't happen. You need to build a strong foundation and frame. Get the right president in the office and keep the right presidents in the office and work towards what you wantbrick at a time. And now I'll step off my soap box and anticipate the onslought of comments and arguments I'm probably not bright enough or informed enough to address.
